Ontario Hands Free Law – $500 Fines Come Into Effect February 1st
Police Phase In New Law By Issuing Warnings To Motorists

The CBC reported today that since the Hands Free law came into effect in Ontario on October 26th, police have already issued over 1000 warnings to motorists caught driving and using a handheld device at the same time. As of February 1st, police will begin issuing fines for $500.00 to anyone caught violating the new law. If involved in an accident, drivers could also be charged with careless driving.
Drivers who are cell phone users are encouraged to adjust their habits or switch to a hands free device or service that will allow them maintain full control of the vehicle - with both hands on the wheel. Currently, there are many accessories, such as bluetooth headsets and speaker devices that enable drivers to make calls without having to use their hands.
